Images for the sequence

these are the criminals in question...these are the images that we will be using in the sequence.
They are all for when we film the P.I putting the images that he has taken onto his laptop.

Filming Stills

these are all the images that i took on Tuesday whilst filming, i have also got stills for the scene to which we put the images on the laptop, but they do not have people in it filming.
Journal 28/01/11

so today we are just editing and getting loads of stuff done, on Tuesday we did some more filming as we had to re-film the part when Sean walked through the door and we also had to film a part outside were it looks as if Sean who plays the detective is taking pictures of Si Hin who plays Mao Yung handing over drugs to someone.

We still need to re-film the part were Sean is on the phone and the laptop scene were he puts all of the images that he took onto his laptop.

Used Clips???

These are a couple of used clips that we thought could work really well in our sequence..Take a look.

They are mainly showing riots and people getting arrested on the news and coming out of trials..we thought that this would go well with the triad theme as we could make people think that they are triads and show the affects of triad gangs and so forth.

Today we simply uploaded the bits of film that we had already done onto the mac's ready to edit. There was a little trouble which was simply that the video would not upload on the computer but we were able to get it on there with a little bit of help.
Next lesson i hope that we will edit or maybe do the last little bit of filming that we have to do!!
BFI

On the 12th of January we went to the National Film Theatre on South bank right next to the Thames and it was amazing ....

I thought that it would be good to include a map of where it is just in case some one looking at my blog might want to go there.....;)
I took loads of notes but i am still in the process of writing them up on the computer but once i have written them up they are going on my blog straight away!!!
Once we had the lecture we had lunch.. i chose a Mcdees as you do.....

When we came back from our lunch they treated us to a film which was Sherlock Holmes.....With Robert Downy Junior and Jude Law....Yes Jude Law whom i dislike however i must say that i thought the music was exceptional and the way that they did the little bits were Holmes explains in slow motion what he is about to inflict onto his target before doing it...superb!!!

Here is a little preview of inside the Theatre and tell me you wouldn't want to go there!!!
I will most likely go there some time soon in fact i am not most likely!!!
I recommend it people it is worth the money i promise!!

Images of the place we filmed

Charlton

We went to Charlton to do our filming, it was a suppliers....food and that stuff. We filmed then working and in there office, it was really funny as they kept looking at us and we got a little freaked....as you do. We used all the shots that we said we would use on our storyboards and we added a couple and we found a broken down racing car with all the engine/windows out and thought that it looked really cool and that we had to use it in our sequence or it was a crime. As you see the little alley way we also filmed down there and that was were the broken down car was. The second image is of the office that we used, it was really small but we made the most of it and we made sure that we used the shots that we intended to use. We wanted to involve drugs (not real ones :o) so i put some salt in a couple of bags that my nose rings were in and Si Hin bought massive bags of potato starch and let me tell you it looked real all right!! Even the guys that worked there were a bit miffed as to why there were 'drugs' with us ...they gave us weird looks for it.

The second from the bottom is of the entrance to the packers and we used this bit to show Si Hin walking to and fro the office and also when we were filming the workers working. The top image is of the broken down car that would have been a crime not to use in our film.

14/01/11

Today we have been in the library on the Macs try and figure some things out including sound and used clips to put in our sequence.
We have also come up with a date to film some more of our sequence which will be on Sunday the 16th of January in Charlton, in a suppliers warehouse thing.
We will be meeting in Welling and getting the bus up there and most likely meeting in the mid afternoon, once we do this we will edit it when we come back to school.

 (this post includes schedule/meeting times)

Music for the film

We have finally found the right piece of music for our film, it is called Nunchaku by someone called Jay Chou.

We decided to use this piece of music it isn't too up tempo but it is just the right speed, however when looking it over we thought that maybe an instrumental version of the song could work better. We cannot find an instrumental version of the song so Si Hin is on Final cut pro as i speak trying to take the vocals out of the song and loop it so that it is purely instrumental throughout the sequence.
We have also got some clips of Hong Kong landscape from when Si Hin went to China, they are all home videos so no need to look for copyrighting.
This will really make our sequence authentic and give it the triad feel that we are desperately hoping for.

Research

We decided to do a little bit of research to find out what the Chinese laws are when it comes to copyrighting things. this is what we found,

Copyright law of the people's Republic of China

Article 2 Works of Chinese citizens, legal entities
or other organizations, whether published or not,
shall enjoy copyright in accordance with this Law.
Any work of a foreigner or stateless person which is
eligible to enjoy copyright under an agreement concluded
between the country to which the foreigner belongs or in
which he has habitual residence and China, or under an
international treaty to which both countries are party, shall
be protected in accordance with this Law.
Works of foreigners or stateless persons first published
in the territory of the People's Republic of China shall
enjoy copyright in accordance with this Law.
Any work of a foreigner who belongs to a country which
 has not concluded an agreement with China, or which is not
a party to an international treaty with China or a stateless
person first published in an country which is a party to an
international treaty with China, or in such a member state
or nonmember state, shall be protected in accordance with this
 Law.
Article 3 For the purposes of this Law, the term "works"
includes works of literature, art, natural science,
social science, engineering technology and the like which are
expressed in the following forms:

(1) written works;
(2) oral works;
(3) musical, dramatic, quyi', choreographic and acrobatic works;
(4) works of fine art and architecture;
(5) photograPh1c works;
(6) cinematographic works and works created by virtue of an
analogous method of film production;
(7) drawings of engineering designs, and product designs;
maps, sketches and other graphic works and model works;
(8) computer software;
(9) other works as provided for in laws and administrative
regulations.

This is all from this website:

This is all useful information in knowing where we stand when we use their music,
this basically says that we can use Chinese music under the condition that it is used
in work and if it is displayed on say YouTube that we clearly display that it is not our
music and that we have not copyrighted.

Meat Suppliers

This is a photo of the place that we will be filming in Charlton. It looks really grubby and very secluded so that is why it works so well. Here we will be filming the men working and we will be using there office in the back, i think that is a very good place to film as it gives the right effect to the film. This is the main entrance to the suppliers and around it, it is very secluded and not many people walk around the area apparently. It all works in our favor.

Types of Audience

Audience

When creating anything visual you need to think about who your target audience is going to be as without them you wouldn't have a piece of work. You need to think about many things such as,
What age do you want them to be and if just one particular age group, why that age?

First off we do not want to put and age group on our film as we feel that all ages from 15 could come and enjoy it. This is an action packed film that we feel even the older generation could benefit from.

Is there a certain type of person that you are aiming this film towards? If so why?

We aren't purposely aiming our film at a certain genre of people as this is a film we would like to be watched by everyone, but we feel that it is mainly aimed at the older generation and the more gritty loving people out there. As our film is in the crime genre we understand not everyone will like it or be interested in it at first.

Would you want your film to hit the big blockbusters?

When it comes to hitting the big time we would love that to happen but in a personal context i much prefer independent films as i find that they are more diverse and have more meaning and you get much better viewers then in the big blockbusters, so i would like to try making our film more independent then big time.

Finally would you go and watch your film?

When we thought up the idea for the film i was really excited because i sounded to amazing and i love films like that, the whole crime genre is fascinating to me. If we got the right actors and the right atmosphere i think also that the triad theme makes it really unique. Over all i would defiantly go and see this film if i had an opportunity!!
Music

This is the music that we were thinking of using but after some thought we came to think that maybe it was too upbeat for what we were looking for, also as it is a soundtrack to a movie that most likely it is copyrighted, we are still going to use a Chinese song but one that is more fitting and that we know would not be copyrighted, so tomorrow we will look at Si Hin's ipod and see what he has to offer ;)

Journal

Over the weekend me and Charlotte had to meet up to discuss the filming and finish off the storyboard, before we could finish off the storyboard we had to check that we were still OK to film in Si Hin's restaurant because of we were not then we would not have been able to put that in, in the storyboard. When we rang him up he told us that we couldn't so we were in a MASSIVE dilemma!!! We had no idea what to do, so we remembered that when Charlotte was doing her music video in year eleven that we went to a meat packing place which Si Hin organized so we rang him up again to check and see if we could do that again, luckily his mum was going there the next day so we asked him tog o along and ask...we got a brilliant deal, i found out this morning that they will let us film there, use their office and film them working which is just what we wanted. Phew!!! We were nearly worried there.
We also decided that to go along with the triad theme of the movie to choose a Chinese song that we had previously heard on Si Hin's Ipod. We are just waiting to see if it is copyrighted and some Chinese songs aren't apparently so after we hear back about that we will have our final decision.

Filming

We are going to be doing some filming tomorrow night (11/01/11) after school to start off, it will be of Sean who is acting as our mysterious detective and we will hopefully be able to get an office to film it in.
Our next filming will be on the weekend either on the Saturday or the Sunday (16/01/11 or 17/01/11) this will be at the meat suppliers the main part of our filming. The rest of our time in lessons will either be devoted to editing or blogging away what we have done and what we have found out.

Storyboard

Storyboard
This is our storyboard, we have done 33 shots, we have added the film crew and the title, however we may decide to change where to put the title of the actual film. We were thinking about using found images but we were not sure of we were allowed to use them so we decided to leave it the way it is. We  have also found the perfect song for these sequence and we are finding out if it is copyrighted, it is a Chinese song and we have been told that some of the music is not copyrighted to it may be possible, we chose to do a Chinese song because it adds to the triad affect of the movie. It all still in progress. We had the first idea to set some of it in a Chinese restaurant but due to some delays and some people's mums canceling and telling us that she doesn't want filming in her kitchen...weird?? We were not able to do that so we had to think of a new idea, so we are now going to film in a meat packing place full of Chinese people to be in the movie for us.
We have plenty of the film planned out but it is just a matter of filming and editing and getting everything in place. But i think that the finished product will be amazing or good.

07/01/11

Today we talked about changing the name of the title as we asked a lot of people what they thought of the name that we already had they weren't too keen on it, as it is very important for the audience to understand the movie that they are watching we decided to change it to 'Closure' as it was more catchy and easier to understand. Simple is better.
These are some of the other names that we were deliberating,
Last Assignment,
The last job,
A job too far,
End of the line,
Open case,
Private Investigation,
and
Hard Boiled - Which was our main choice but we found out that it was the name of a real film so we couldn't film.

We have an idea as to how we want the font, for example in 'Die Hard' the font is one of the main examples that we want to make as it is sophisticated and it has hard edges, so it gives it a more simple but yet edgier look.

We also started to do our story board which was a long and annoying process....i don't like storyboarding :/.........
we haven't yet finished but whilst we were doing it we were thinking of the places that we could shoot it and the shots that we could use. We managed to bend Si Hin's arm into letting us film in his shop (he has to bribe his mum with £500).

We then wanted to design our production company logo because we were not certain of we had to make up our one or use an existing one, so in the thought that we might have to make our own here is our made up production company logo, it is called 'Triad Pictures'

We also decided who we wanted to play our detective, the first person that we thought of doing it we decided that he wasn't good enough and he tried to join another group so we decided to cut him from the film. We found some one else to do it who can act very well and is up for the job!!

05/01/11

Today we were finally allowed to go into the mac room and use them!! YAY!
Once we had gotten the basics down we decided to start and choose different types of typography for our film, we came up with a few and not only experimented with the type but also how it was to be lay outed with the spacing and the lining.

We then decided that we needed to not only think more about changing the title but looking at different typography again, a more wider range.
This is what we came up for and we decided to use it for his business card only but this is what we came up with.

We first thought that we would like the type writer style of writing as it would be similar to 'The Wire' as it looks really good for a crime drama, however personally i felt that it was used too much and can look like a cliche so i went off of it a little bit, however i did look at it and i asked the rest of my team what they thought and we discussed using it and trying to figure out how to make it look more sophisticated then other types and more original, we may even design it ourselves but we'll see. This is an example of what we were talking about.

Type 2

This is the second idea that we came up with and we thought that it looked really sophisticated and like the real thing.
This would work well as a the title for the movie but whether we used the same text for the whole sequence i am not sure but i think if we try it, that it may work very well and give it a more affective and professional look.
Also it will make it look more like a movie then a TV drama which is what we are aiming for as this is a sequence for a movie.

Type

Different Styles of Typography

We need to explore different styles of type to get the right one.

These are all of the same font which is called Orator Std but each one is laid out differently. However all three in our group decided that we much preferred the layout of the third one but to make the PI much bigger like CSI does in their text.
